Electric vehicle chargers for use on UK homes

So you have made the choice to switch over to an electric car (or hybrid)? The next step is to look at the choice of home charging options and choosing the right home charger isn’t easy. You will need to consider what you need from a charger.

Does it have to charge really quickly? Does it come with or without a tethered cable? Has it got smart features that you can control from an app?

This guide below will hopefully allow you to make an informed choice about the best way to charge your electric vehicle.

Types of connector for home charging

Type 1 (5 pins) – This is the standard connector on US cars but is rare in the UK. It has no locking mechanism and charges at about 12.5 miles per hour on a 3.7kWh supply, and at about 25 mph on a 7kWh.

Type 2 (7 pins) – By far the most common connector on new cars, this can also handle three pase electrical supply, and has the added security of a locking mechanism (meaning your cables are safe). This charges at about 12.5 miles per hour on a 3.7kWh supply, 25 mph on a 7kWh, and at about 75 mph on a 22kWh three phase supply which may be available at your workplace.
